Overcoming Obstacles
My name is Fabianna Palos and I was born in Visalia, CA on January 6, 1998. Growing up was very difficult for me because I am the youngest and only girl out of four boys and my parents were always working. I noticed that the older I got, the more I distanced myself from everyone. It was always easier for me to keep to myself. As the years passed, I never grew out of that quiet faze completely. Living in such a small city like Lindsay didn’t help that whatsoever.
Through the years, I looked up to my mom and my sister-in-law. They have been through alot and since I can remember, they’ve been my biggest role models. My mom had my first brother when she was only fifteen. She somehow still finished high school. A couple of years later, she had my other brother. With two kids, my mom decided to go back to school to become a nurse. She had no choice but to be a single parent and go to school. Later on, she had my other two brothers with my dad and finally finished school. My mom has been a nurse for about 15 years now and she is working at Corcoran State Prison. My sister-in-law has always been such a huge inspiration for me. She graduated from Lindsay High School in 2006 with a GPA of 4.16. After graduating, she went straight into University of California Santa Barbara. She went to UCSB and got her major Psychology and got her minor in health science. After graduating from UCSB, she went to California School of Professional Psychology Fresno and graduated from there in 2012 with a masters degree in Organizational Behavior. After graduating from CSPP, she got into California School of Forensic Studies and also graduated in 2012 with a masters in Clinical Forensic Psychology. In 2015, at the age of 27, she graduated from California School of Forensic Studies with her PhD in clinical Forensic Psychology.
These two women have helped me in so many ways that they might not even know about. They have helped me strive for more and more and have always pushed me to do my hardest in each way possible. They taught me to never give up no matter how hard things got. The end of my junior year, things started to get more difficult. In and out of school. School was just getting harder and harder and things at home weren’t going good. I thought I was going to fail each class because I could never focus. The harder things got, my mom and sister-in-law made sure I focused on myself and my grades. They have inspired me to reach for better things in life. Now, I picture myself doing big things in life, thanks to them. Everything I’ve done, I have put my all into to make these two proud, and I will continue on making them proud.
Despite all the hardships life has thrown my way, I’ve learned that you can never give up. I am glad I have such a great family to support me with each decision I make. They have shaped me to be the intelligent and big-hearted girl I am today. I don’t know where I’d be without each one of them. I am confident that I will either attend a UC or a CSU in the fall of 2016. I know wherever I decide to go, I will have my family there continuing to support me each step of the way.
